Transport & Disability Experience
Approximately 1 in 10 Europeans of all ages might be defined as being disabled. Whilst there is not a direct correlation between age and disability, the onset of age related disabilities as people get older, and the current demographic trend in Western societies towards an ageing society, mean that the proportion of people with mobility problems is likely to increase in future years.
Transport & Disability
Approximately 400,000 children in Great Britain are disabled, as are three quarters of a million young adults and one and a quarter million people in middle age.
Achieving equal opportunities for disabled people calls for a multi-pronged strategy, including combating discrimination, facilitating independent living, promoting greater social integration and enhancing opportunities. Making the travelling environment more accessible for everyone, which might include removing barriers to mobility that currently exist for disabled people, is an important component in encouraging greater participation of all members of society.
A variety of transport initiatives have been developed over the last 30 years to improve the mobility of disabled people, including people with sensory disabilities, people with learning disabilities and people with a mental health problem, and the right to mobility of disabled persons is now enshrined within the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
