European Transport Experience
TTR is one the foremost companies in Europe for helping local authorities and other organisations to gain access to European research and demonstration funding programmes, not only in the transport sector but also in energy, environment and social affairs.
European Transport Experience
Transport & Travel Research Ltd (TTR) have carried out a number of projects in the area of European Travel, some examples of our knowledge can be seen below.
If a project website exists a link will be found on the project title, please click this link if you would like to find out more about the project and you will be taken to the relevant project website.
PRACTISE
PRACTISE aims to create a package of best practices to help regions create and implement Sustainable Energy Communities. It is a horizontal action under the Intelligent Energy Europe programme. TTR-France supports the Italian coordinator and the Council of Ile et Vilaine in project management activities.
CURACAO
TTR co-ordinates CURACAO, which aims to support city decision makers in developing and setting up road user charging schemes for their cities. The project will scrutinize a number of case study cities across Europe, with the aim of producing good practice guidelines and ways to overcoming barriers to setting up, implementing and managing road user charging schemes.
ECLIPSE
ECLIPSE is part of the European Union programme of Community action to encourage co-operation between Member States to combat social exclusion. The project is addressing the issue of the transport impacts on social exclusion and consists of a series of high-profile events in Italy, Romania, UK and Brussels. TTR is Co-ordinator.
MIDAS
The objective of MIDAS is to encourage transfer to less energy intense modes of transport by optimising the use of soft measures such as information and marketing campaigns, car clubs etc. TTR is Project Manager for this 3-year project supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme, in which case studies will be implemented in 6 cities – Aalborg, Bologna, Clermont Ferrand, Cork, Liverpool and Suceava.
SUCCESS and SMILE

Two of the four large-scale demonstration projects in the CIVITAS II Programme. In SUCCESS TTR is Project Manager and Evaluation Co-ordinator, and provides specific dissemination, management and technical support to the participating cities: La Rochelle, Preston and Ploiesti. For SMILE TTR coordinates the evaluation and dissemination work. Both projects involve a wide range of activities including clean vehicles, soft measures, ITS, demand management, personalised travel plans etc.
PARTNER
TTR is subcontracted to Merseytravel to undertake project management and evaluation activities with partners in La Rochelle, Rochefort, Belfast, Dublin and Santiago de Compostela. The project addresses the provision of high-quality information services for travellers travelling to and around the Atlantic Area about transport options, both before they travel, during travel, and when they arrive; multi-modal booking and payment services; high-quality intermodal facilities between local public transport and inter-regional transport modes at Atlantic Area gateways; and high-quality, accessible local public transport services to and from Atlantic Area gateways, using clean vehicle technologies.
Merseytravel European Advice and Consultancy, 2005-2010
TTR is retained by Merseytravel to provide advice and assistance in connection with European Union policies and programmes. TTR's main role is to provide advice on funding possibilities, develop project ideas, establish transnational consortia and prepare bids.
ITISS
ITISS (Intermodal Traveller Information Systems) is an EU-funded project within the Interreg 3B Community Initiative. TTR prepared the successful bid and is now acting as Project Co-ordinator of this three year research and development project which aims to improve the content of and access to traveller information services in five partner cities / regions for a wide range of travellers. A key innovative aspect of the project will be to provide access to travel information while the user is on-the-move.
EC Benchmarking
TTR was appointed to lead the European Commission's Urban Transport Benchmarking Initiative. The aim is to exploit benchmarking as a practical tool by which cities may improve the sustainability of their urban transport systems. The work involves leadership of a group of participating cities and experts, development of indicators, data analysis, organisation of conferences and site visits, and dissemination of results.
MAPLE
The MAPLE Project, co-ordinated by TTR on behalf of Merseytravel, aimed to promote the mobility and encourage the social inclusion of two broad and heterogeneous groups of people: people with learning disabilities and people with mental health problems. Whilst a considerable amount of work had been done to remove physical barriers in the environment, the problems faced by people with a cognitive impairment or a mental health problem were less well documented. The main output of MAPLE was a set of good practice guidelines.
PLUME (Planning Urban Mobility in Europe)
PLUME was an EC-funded network established to facilitate the exchange of innovative solutions in the field of land use and transport planning research from the research community to the cities of Europe. The project built on the work of the Land Use and Transport Research cluster in the EC’s City of Tomorrow Programme. TTR was the Project Co-ordinator.
ARTS
TTR assisted the Welsh Assembly to design and implement a rural transport demonstration in Gwynedd and to evaluate the demonstration on their behalf. ARTS is an EU Fifth Framework RTD Project, which aims to demonstrate and evaluate a range of measures for providing transport services in low density rural areas. Gwynedd is one of 10 sites from across the EU and Eastern Europe taking part in the project.
EDICT
TTR co-ordinated the EDICT project which assessed the concept of Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) as a potential solution to meet the need for new and sustainable forms of transport. The assessment was undertaken in 4 European cities: Cardiff, Eindhoven, Huddinge, and Rome. Practical assessment of user and community benefits was accomplished through full-scale demonstration on the ULTra PRT test track in Cardiff.
Some older European projects that TTR has been involved in include:
