Kneeling buses under scrutiny

TTR has been commissioned by the Department for Transport (DfT) to undertake research into “kneeling” buses. The study will guide the Department in formulating a policy for these buses which allow the driver to lower the step for passengers boarding and alighting the bus.

As part of the research, TTR will investigate the costs and benefits of different policies. This will include measuring the consumption of fuel whilst kneeling, the time saved by passengers boarding and alighting, and passengers’ attitudes towards the kneeling buses in general and the policy options in particular. Two different policy options: either kneeling at every stop, or at the request of the passenger/the discretion of the driver, will be explored as part of the study.
