B&Q embarks on travel plan programme
B&Q, the DIY chain with over 300 outlets nationwide, continues to embark on an ambitious expansion programme of new store development, opening a further 20 stores this year. For many years the company has been taking action to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and as a result is fully aware of the need for sustainable development. In order to satisfy planning conditions for the development of each of the new stores, B&Q recognises the need to submit travel plans alongside planning applications.
John Miller, Travel Plan Manager at B&Q, has already overseen the development of a Store Travel Plan Strategy for the company and recently appointed Transport & Travel Research Ltd to assist in the process of submitting travel plans for each store. This project will involve quantifying the travel of employees to and from work, examining the impacts of these travel patterns and proposing a set of targeted recommendations to encourage the use of more sustainable modes of transport (i.e. walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing, etc). Once the travel plans for the new stores are in place, and operating successfully, B&Q may implement travel plans across all its existing UK stores.
