The
sustainability of rural society and the rural economy is an important issue
for transport policy. The development of integrated rural transport solutions
for both passengers and goods must recognise the important role that all transport
modes can play. Government sees the need for:

- good quality public transport
- better co-ordination of services
- a stronger role for local communities
- improved road safety
Local authorities now have access to a variety of rural transport investment funds to meet these objectives, such as rural bus subsidy grants, rural bus challenge, rural transport partnership funds, parish funds and community rail partnerships.
