Public Transport Experience

Transport & Travel Research Ltd (TTR) realise one of the most challenging tasks facing transport planners is to create attractive alternatives to the private car through improvements to public transport and the provision of better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Public Transport Experience

The following are examples of projects that we have undertaken:

Transport Planning Support

TTR carried out the Blackburn Public Transport Review for Blackburn & Darwen Council. This involved a survey of public transport users and non public transport users in order to inform the planning of future public transport services, particularly bus routes, a value for money assessment and to contribute to the development of the future Local Transport Plan (LTP3). (2009 - 2010).

Northamptonshire County Council commissioned TTR to carry out a critique of their Local Transport Plan 2 (LTP2) Progress Report 2008 (PR2008). The study evaluated the progress made and reported on LTP2 PR2008 and assessed whether or not it included or addressed all the relevant detail when compared to the LTP2 document and related service plans. A relatively short, sharp review and critique was required, to highlight particular elements that were considered to be missing and opportunities that might be considered for LTP3. (2009) .

TTR were partners in the EC project MIDAS. The objective of MIDAS was to encourage transfer to less energy intense modes of transport by optimising the use of soft measures such as information and marketing campaigns, car clubs, etc. MIDAS addressed existing barriers to the introduction of soft measures by means of case studies in 6 cities (Liverpool, Aalborg, Cork , Clermont Ferrand, Bologna and Suceava) linked to the overall urban plans. Core actions included a review of city land use and mobility plans and the potential contribution of soft measures; innovative consultation approaches with a wide range of stakeholders; and implementation of a range of measures to encourage the use of walking, cycling and public transport (2006 - 2008) .

The Merseyside Local Transport Plan (LTP) Partnership (Merseytravel and Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral Councils) appointed TTR to provide market research and testing support to ensure that the Merseyside TravelWise campaign is effectively positioned, targeted and monitored to support the delivery of the Local Transport Plan in Merseyside. (2006 - 2007)

Public Transport Information

TTR has carried out a large number of projects in this area (see ITS pages for further details), including:

  • Development of a timetable database for Norfolk County Council.
  • Evaluated the public transport information service provided by Nottingham Travelwise Centre.
  • Carried out research for Transport Direct (DfT) into travel service needs and whether a cost could be levied on the service.
  • Undertook study into the provision of public access information terminals (Infopoints) in West Yorkshire .
  • Designed a passenger transport information strategy for Hertfordshire.
  • Assessed the effectiveness of public transport information provision for Hampshire County Council.
  • Developed timetable database for Norfolk County Council.

Fares, Ticketing Schemes, Smart cards

TTR led study to apportion concessionary bus travel scheme running costs across seven local authorities in Devon . (2007)

Modal Integration

TTR was a partner in START, a transnational INTERREG IVB project whose objective is to improve the interconnection of passenger transport networks. The project included actions relating to: marketing collective modes of transport; accessibility of information for disabled people; advanced traveller information systems; ticketing systems; and improved transport services and interchanges. The 7.5M Euro project had 14 partners from the UK , France , Spain and Portugal . (YEAR)

Public Transport Accessibility

TTR identified and recommend solutions to overcome transport and accessibility barriers for residents of the King's Norton Three Estates in relation to employment and training opportunities at the University Hospital Birmingham (UBH). This provided an independent evaluation and feasibility study of which initiatives Centro should adopt in order to maximise the economic and regeneration potential of the UHB. (2009).

HITRANS commissioned TTR to review the public transport services and information provision for key tourist routes in the Highlands & Islands region of Scotland . The project included a scoping study that investigated whether existing public transport and information services are suitable for marketing to tourists and developed recommendations for improvements to be made. (2009) .

TTR was commissioned by ULTra PRT (formerly ATS) to carry out the before and after survey of both bus and Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) systems linking the business car park and Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. The surveys measured passenger satisfaction of using both transit systems as part of the evaluation process for CityMobil and BAA.(2008 - 2009)

The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) contracted TTR to lead a team of experts to conduct a High Speed Train (HST) Impact Study. The purpose of the study was to estimate the socio-economic and environmental impact of the HST projects upon investment locations. The well regarded final report allowed the client to seek further high speed rail opportunities. (2008)

TTR carried out the Gloucestershire Park & Share feasability study for the County Council. The project involved the gathering of background information, including best practice case studies, developing the context of the study within Gloucestershire future plans, particularly in relation to LTP2. The final task was to assess the practicality of implementing Park and Share in Gloucestershire and the best potential locations. (2007)
